“The Leaking Pipe Problem”

WHY SO FEW GIRLS PARTICIPATE IN STEM?

What is the Leaky Pipe Problem?

A phenomenon when having the same number of girls and boys in kindergarten, and all the way to Ph.D., for every 1 boy that dropped out, 2 girls drop out…

Why did I start this project?

I am a grade 10 student studying at an all-girls school. Frankly, I am also the only girl on my co-curricular robotics team. I have been aware of the issue of the lack of girls in STEM for a long time. Thus, I decided to take this opportunity to further investigate this issue.

Why is it important?

Since science and math were first “created”, the community has been dominated by males, and it was not long ago that women started to enter the STEM field. While our society is starting to value the importance of diversity in the STEM industry, the community stays unwelcoming and the problem remains. The STEM community is an intimidating one, yet innovation requires a diverse community with distinct perspectives.

What are some solutions?

It is important to recognize that this is not a problem with a single solution. Each member of our community needs to be aware and engage others to participate. The STEM field can often be seen as intimidating, however, that is not the truth.
